Slipping And Sliding

Posted by Viktoria Michaelis on January 28, 2013 in Personal |

The days of snow are drawing to a close. Last night it rained, then froze, and that meant the streets were like an ice rink this morning. Not the best start to a Monday morning, but the thought of spring being just around the corner makes it all worthwhile!

Had to make a short call by the post office too. Remember that man who commissioned me to write an article and didn’t pay? I had hoped a mail and then my small post might spur him on, but it has not happened. Perhaps the Rector of his university in Ankara will have other thoughts. Fine, I’ve lost the money I should have earned, but I suspect that, if the college enforces it rules, he will lose rather more. And learn a valuable lesson. I may well be in a foreign country and just a girl, but it’s best not to under-estimate me, or any other woman for that matter!

I’m not going to call it revenge or anything like that, because revenge often leaves a bitter taste in the mouth and I certainly don’t have a good feeling over the whole affair, but writing and then sending the letter was something of a relief for me. Now I can move on to other things.

Love & Kisses, Viki.

    Would that be Ankara, Turkey?

Careful with the ice: we’ve had it here, 10 cm thick since December and I have broken at least three legs in a month.

  • Francois says:

I doubt there is ice on the streets of Ankara (Turkey, named after the delicious eponymous roasted bird). I was thinking of Kyiv.

The reason I was asking about which Ankara is “do not hold your breath if it is the Turkey one”: what was done to you is an entirely acceptable business practice for a lot of people there. Firstly because they do not believe in contracts, they believe in relationships. Secondly because you are not Turkish, it makes you fair game for an attempt at cheating. Thirdly because your “client” might know you are a woman.

The legs I broke were my own, while taking my daughter to school in the morning. You should hear her laugh.

    • I am now considerably more careful when someone makes me an offer. In this case he – knowing I am a woman too – approached me and made the offer of $50 and, after the work was delivered the same evening, even thanked me and asked about payment since he doesn’t / didn’t know hoe PayPal works and so on.

I can well imagine that your daughter did laugh, especially since you broke all three legs…. but I assume that this was on differing occasions?

About five minutes apart per event.

“Legs” must be understood in a liberal sense here. However, zuuuuuuuuip, you’re flying and very shortly after land on your ass (best-case scenario) while holding a pack-sack (they load kids here) and a crazy dog remains number 11 on my list of ten things I like to do in the morning.

    Yet another snowstorm today.
