Do Spammers Read?

Posted by Viktoria Michaelis on April 30, 2013 in Internet |

I was wondering, a brief thought inspired by a spam I just deleted, whether spammers can – or do – read. You wouldn’t believe the number of comments marked as spam which ask me which blogging platform I’m using – it’s a standalone WordPress – or what my theme is – Desk Mess Mirrored – or whether I have any problems with spam. I have to laugh every time I see that last one: no I have no problems with spam, it gets deleted, end of story!

Up until quite recently I was getting about one hundred spams a day through a small error on my part: I left a comment form open on one of the Pages, where comments really aren’t needed, and someone obviously passed it around that it was there and waiting. The loophole has been closed now, as has the comment box on that Page, and I am down to maybe ten, fifteen a day now. A good, healthy sum to settle with.

The one that I just deleted went exactly like this:

It’s a shame you don’t have a donate button! I’d most certainly donate to this brilliant blog! I guess for now i’ll settle for book-marking and adding your RSS feed to my Google account.

Yes, the mail address was a gmail one, but the web site linked to YouTube which suggests to me that the person can sort of write, but reading is something of a problem.

Of course there is a donate button on here, a very new and important one! There, right there, on the right hand side (well, it will be for a few days until this post gets pushed down the line). Feel free to click it, I don’t mind spammers donating to my project at all, they have to be useful for something.

Love & Kisses, Viki.
