Draconian Times

Well, it looks like I will have to scrub one country from my ‘to visit’ list, for the time being at least. I know that some countries, some governments, have problems with the lifestyles and beliefs of other people but, if they are just there and being themselves without upsetting anything, without being violent, or stealing or disrupting the routine of a civilized world, why go against them?

What harm do ordinary people who just happen to be gay present to such a person as Vladimir Putin? Does he think that we will take over the country? Ruin its economic chances in the world? Burst his oil pipelines or turn the youth of his country the other way?

The Soviet Union was effectively closed for so many years, was an area considered too dangerous to travel to – especially as an American – and now, as things seem to be changing for the better and we have a chance to experience the wonders of a long and fascinating history in the first person, why close it down to so many people again? Just because a person is gay? It certainly seems so, and that is more than a shame.

Really, any surprises here? Vladimir is looking forward to the nineteenth century, before all those regrettable incidents that polluted the pure Eastern Slaving Empire.
Don’t take it out of context, it is illegal to be anything in Russia.
