A Vision In Black

There comes a moment in every woman’s life when, wandering around the shops, through the streets or just sitting in front of the television watching some soap opera or other, she thinks: ‘I want to have those clothes’.

I cannot think of or imagine any woman who has not had this thought at one time or another and this is, I suspect, the main reason they look with such critical gaze at other women, what they are wearing and whether it fits their form, their character, their appearance or not. Would that dress make me look even better than I already look? Could I carry it off in the same way as she does? Would I look like such a slut or is that just her?

To be honest, I have no idea what goes through the minds of all those other women as they look at fashions, at what their friends have managed to find, at what their rivals are wearing during some smart function or even the tea party at a local church. I am not sure that I want to either! What I do know is that there are thoughts there, not necessarily good thoughts, but thoughts nonetheless, and that is precisely what the fashion industry wishes, expects and, through subtle and sometimes blatant advertizing, creates or demands.

Three or four times a year we are suddenly faced with something completely new from the fashion industry: the spring catalog comes out mid-winter, the summer catalog a short while later; Fall fashions are here before we have had a chance to choose that ideal dress for the hottest months and remind us of impending winter.

But it’s not just dresses, blouses and skirts which assail our eyes and senses: shoes, handbags, shoulder bags, sunglasses, bikinis – have we got our bikini figure ready for 2014 yet? No time to wait, the season is almost upon us! And what about your legs, your butt? Are you ready to be seen in the newest trends with all that extra weight these models clearly do not have? Fashion is far more complicated than just seeing something which looks good and which we could, stretching our imagination just a touch, see ourselves in.

And then there are other sides to the coin. As we all know, a coin has three sides; two we can see at all times whilst one is hidden. The third side, for me, is something which irritates more than anything else: I want to look good and I have no objection to being seen looking good, but do all those other people have to see me looking good in such a manner? What thoughts are going through their minds when they stop in the middle of the street and watch me wander nonchalantly by?

Not that I am going to wander the streets at my age in something which resembles a schoolgirl’s uniform or gives the impression that I might be one, not at my age!

Even so, if it looks good on her… would it still work with my figure? Could I get away with it and not appear to be either soliciting attention – or just soliciting – or acting like an attention whore?

One secret no woman has ever been able to accept: no matter how good we may think we look, few of us are going to be able to carry ‘it’ – that special something few have – off in the same manner as a professional.

I can tell you another little secret too: no matter how much we may want something, it is unlikely that our rival, that other woman we seem to feel jealous of, is going to just hand them over. Such things only happen in French films.

Love & Kisses, Viki.
