How Can You Not Want Children?

Posted by Viktoria Michaelis on July 18, 2014 in Immoral Conversations |

Everyone knows that lesbians can’t have children; it’s in the nature of things that when you have sex with other women, children are pretty much not on the agenda. What I find strange is those people who seem to think because you sleep with another woman, because another woman is your whole life, you don’t want to have them. Whereby they clearly overlook the many thousands of married and unmarried single-sex couples, male and female, who do have children and manage to raise them quite successfully. How many surveys have claimed that single-sex parents raise happier children?

The thing is, many women simply don’t want children, no matter how sweet and endearing they may be, and by this I don’t just mean lesbians. Are we still at the stage in our evolution where children are the be-all and end-all of a relationship? Is no family complete without them?

Children can be an enrichment in a relationship for some, of that there is no doubt, but it’s much the same – as a very crass example – of wanting a pet: either you do or you don’t. Either there are too many people in the world, according to who you happen to listen to, or there are too few. The pension system, we are told, will collapse if everyone doesn’t have children: schools will be forced to close; the work market swill dry up in a few years time and so on. Does that mean we all have to, or that we shouldn’t? Can the world sustain even more people than it already has?

Hardly an argument, I realize, and not one which I use. The truth of the matter is, we are quite happy as we are. Quite happy without men in the intimate side of our relationship, quite happy without heterosexual intimacies, quite happy without the addition of another person.

Not quite at the stage of ‘children are the bane of hell’, but happy. Why do so many people believe it their right to tell everyone else that they’d be far better off if they changed their entire lifestyle and do something they’re not attuned to?

Love & Kisses, Viki.
