It snowed overnight. Light flakes of cold snow fell and covered everything outside, creating a wonderful vision which, for many, would have been more welcome over Christmas, but at least it is finally cold.
Normally the outbreak of winter, and especially the first frosting of snow, catches everyone unprepared. It’s not as if they expected winter, the cold weather, icy streets and everything that goes with it. Winter comes only once a year, but is usually a surprise to many. They are fully unprepared for the weather which we have come to associate with the end of the year, the start of a new year.

This year, however, the chaos which usually overtakes the streets is missing. There are no roads blocked by cars trying to navigate their way through the white landscape, no hurried, stressed-out drivers trying to inch their way along the roads or overtake snowplows. It snowed overnight from Saturday to Sunday, when hardly anyone is out and about, when the working day is still many relaxed hours away. A good thing. A little extra time to come to terms with the changed conditions.
It will not last, though. Either the snow will disappear before morning, or we will get more. And then, well, who knows. Perhaps some people will not have noticed the whiteness across the roadways, and panic as they try, at the last minute, to get to work on time. Some things never change.
