The first orders of the year are in and, since the post office was open today, out. Normally a cause for celebration; receiving orders for books on the first day of the year is a good thing, as is, of course, receiving orders for books on every other day of the year. It does, however, have a certain thrill to it.
Not so the postage which has to be changed to meet the new charges imposed by the German postal service. For me it makes little difference, I take the money people pay me to send them their orders and give it away almost immediately. There is the usual bookkeeping entry in my accounts, but no pain as such.

For those purchasing books, however, it is another matter entirely. It is not a small increase – my flat rate for International changes from 3,50 to 3,75 – and annoying as such since there is always the possibility that someone will be put off buying a title by the postage alone. That said, it is a flat rate, so two, three or five books cost the same as one book – will more people purchase more titles as a result?
I also sell my titles through Amazon US, but don’t yet know whether they’ve changed their prices to meet an increase from the US postal service. The next Amazon order will reveal all. Of course, buying through my site is much better for me: I don’t need to pay commission to someone else or juggle funds to meet a shortfall in postage money received. Regardless of which, selling books is a good thing, and I am sure there are many, many people out there interested in reading excellent short story fiction or in-depth works on Freemasonry…
